What is NCSSM Online?

NCSSM Online students at Orientation

NCSSM Online courses are only offered to NCSSM students and ensure students get to know each other over the two year program.

We are a program of the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the nation’s premier public boarding school and a University of North Carolina institution. NCSSM Online offers:

  • The culminating experience for NC high school juniors and seniors ready for the next challenge.
  • A two year program of online learning with real time connections.
  • Exploration of specialized STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) courses available to few, if any, high school students and opportunity to learn with other talented students.
  • A supplemental option to enrollment at a local school, especially for students with limited opportunities in their community.

Program Entry and Credit

Students apply during sophomore year through a competitive admissions process. NCSSM provides a NCSSM transcript for the courses taken in the NCSSM Online program.  There are no tuition costs to attend.

Program Components

NCSSM Online offers a host of rigorous honors or college level online courses parallel to those offered in the NCSSM residential academic program. A unique feature of this two-year program onsite collaborative learning experiences - a vital component of the total NCSSM experience.

The program has these key elements:

All accepted students visit the NCSSM campus to learn about the program expectations and technology, meet faculty and staff, and get to know other students.

Students can take 1-2 classes per semester of advanced NCSSM courses; each class is taught by a NCSSM faculty member. Many courses are aligned with STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) topics.

Each class and has a required weekly evening web-videoconference for the teacher and class to meet together for a live discussion.

Each course has a required weekend once or twice each semester where students visit the NCSSM campus to work with their classmates and teacher and socialize with other program students.

Any rising senior in the program can participate in our week long symposium, modeled after NCSSM’s residential mini-term and independent study opportunities to study a research problem in depth.
