AP Chemistry

Advanced placement course, year-long

Chemistry students conduct a lab under the watchful eye of Mr. Guido Gabbrielli, AP Chemistry instructor.
AP Chemistry provides a comprehensive, thorough coverage of the AP Chemistry curriculum, as outlined by the College Board, and prepares the student for the AP Chemistry exam.

AP Chemistry Online covers the fundamental concepts of chemistry and uses a college-level textbook. The content is delivered on the Web through videos, animations, text, online collaboration tools (live chat and Elluminate web videoconferencing sessions), WebAssign (online homework system), and other online tools. Weekly labs, both virtual and hands-on, follow the traditional format. Hands-on laboratories will be completed at NCSSM or at your local school.

Because of the online delivery and the accelerated nature of the course, students must be independent learners, have good time management and technology skills, and possess strong math and abstract reasoning abilities.

Prerequisites:
One year of chemistry

Identification photo of Mr. Guido Gabbrielli, AP Chemistry instructor.
Mr. Guido Gabbrielli was born and raised in Florence, Italy, and came to the US at the age of 15. He has a BS in Chemistry from Florida State University and a MS in Polymer Chemistry/Textile Engineering from Georgia Tech.

Mr. Gabbrielli has a true passion for teaching chemistry, as he brings a wealth of practical and international knowledge to it. Mr. Gabbrielli constantly strives to maximize student learning by encouraging students to inquire freely and by providing them with a realistic understanding of chemistry.

From 1973 to 2000, Mr. Gabbrielli gained experience in the chemical industry and in international business management. He has worked as a research chemist at the 3M Company in St. Paul, MN, at Celanese Fibers in Charlotte, NC, and for Esprit International Corp. in Atlanta, GA, an international business company. His chemical expertise lies in fluorochemical polymers, polyester fibers and in textile chemical product formulation. Moreover, Mr. Gabbrielli gained international business management experience as International Marketing Director at Esprit International and as Director of the International Trade Division for the State of North Carolina.

In 1987, while working at Esprit International, Mr. Gabbrielli initiated his teaching career as a part-time instructor for Emory University and other Atlanta universities. In 2000 he began teaching chemistry full-time at Enloe High School in Raleigh, a Gifted and Talented Magnet school, and in 2005 became a chemistry instructor at the NC School of Science and Math in Durham. He has taught all levels of chemistry (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Honors, and General Level Chemistry). He recently developed and taught two courses: "Chemistry by Inquiry" and "Industrial Chemistry and Engineering". He continues to teach a seminar every three months at Emory University.

Mr. Gabbrielli enjoys hiking, camping, learning about the history of science and about the Italian Renaissance, taking his students on yearly trips to Italy, and drinking a good cup of cappuccino that he makes himself.
