Dear North Carolina citizens:

There are many high-achieving, highly motivated high school students in North Carolina! With over 1,000+ applications submitted to the NCSSM residential program for approximately 325 openings each spring, it is most disappointing to me not to be able to bring all of these students on our Durham campus each year.

Compensating for my disappointment, I am now very excited to launch a new, innovative program called NCSSM Online, designed to expand the reach of our campus to more of these excellent students. This exclusive two-year program features:
  • innovative, specialized online courses taught by NCSSM faculty - courses that are the same as those offered in our residential program.
  • meetings online with teachers and other top students in North Carolina via web videoconferencing, online chat, and other innovative communication tools.
  • use of innovative and specialized software unique to NCSSM or top universities, including an exciting software tool that allows students to work on courses online and offline.
  • on-campus summer orientations and overnight stays at NCSSM's Durham campus during the school year to work in-person with our faculty and alongside your online peers in labs, interactive, problem-solving activities, and other collaborative activities - not to mention onsite social networking activities.
  • the network of an online community of all NCSSM students from North Carolina who can meet via online student clubs, collaborative learning projects, activities - the opportunities are endless!
  • opportunities to participate in select NCSSM initiatives including competitions, awards, events, and recognitions for outstanding achievements.
This unique opportunity is offered to only those students who apply and meet the rigorous standards for NCSSM learning. Just as when NCSSM began back in 1980 as the first school of its kind in the nation, I look forward to NCSSM Online becoming the first virtual school of its kind. I also look forward to working with NCSSM students on campus and online in a brand new venture!

Sincerely,

Chancellor Emeritus

Dr. Gerald Boarman
